Spray Painting: Surface Preparation


To discuss and describe surface preparation prior to application of protective coatings. To recognize the various surfaces that may be pre-cleaned, prepared, and coated.

  • It is widely acknowledged that the type and degree of surface preparation will have a major bearing on the performance of a coating system.
  • Most paints and coatings are designed and tested to perform well on a surface that receives a given level of surface preparation prior to coating.
  • The is no substitute for adequate surface preparation.
